CHLORIDE UK - Emerson Network Power’s Chloride Trinergy™ UPS Inclusion On Energy Technology Product List (ETPL) Provides Tax Windfall

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, today announced that its Chloride Trinergy™ UPS has been added to the Carbon Trust’s Energy Technology Product List (ETPL). The list is a register of products that, under the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme, allows businesses to write off the whole cost of the equipment against taxable profits in the year of purchase, providing a cash flow boost and incentive to invest in energy-saving equipment.

“The ECA scheme is a key part of the Government’s programme to manage climate change and aims to provide businesses with enhanced tax relief for investments in energy-saving equipment that meets formal criteria specified on the ETPL,” explained Rob Tanzer, technical support manager for the Chloride AC Power business of Emerson Network Power in the United Kingdom. “The ECA system is certainly a step in the right direction, as it provides tax incentives to enable users to justify the purchase of high efficiency products that will then pay for themselves within a relatively short period of time.”

When replacing equipment, businesses and contractors are often tempted to opt for that with the lowest capital cost. However, such immediate cost savings can prove to be a false economy. Considering the life cycle cost before investing in equipment can help reduce costs and improve cash flow in the longer term. According to the Carbon Trust Long Scoping Study Report on Uninterruptible Power Supplies, new UPS technology can deliver 3 percent savings or more over old UPS systems. With the Chloride Trinergy UPS concept, the saving is far more and for large UPS, in power intensive environments such as data centres, it has been estimated that savings can be over 20 MWh/year.

Chloride Trinergy is the most energy efficient Class 1 UPS currently available for protecting mission critical infrastructure, such as Tier 3 and Tier 4 data centres, from disruptions to mains power supply. It is the first UPS that is automatically able to select the most appropriate of the three industry standard operating configurations – Maximum Power Control (VFI), Maximum Energy Saving (VFD) and Power Conditioning (VI). Its modular design means that it can grow from 200 kW as the site requires, up to a maximum of 9.6 MW of active power, minimising initial capital costs and avoiding the loss of efficiency that results from operating at partial loads.

“Chloride Trinergy is able to provide the exact power conditioning necessary by intelligently choosing the most efficient means of compensating disturbances. By using only the energy necessary to smooth out disturbances, it achieves a 4 percent to 7 percent greater efficiency than standard medium and high power UPS,” said Tanzer. “Its unique architecture and technology allows it to achieve an average working efficiency of 97.9 percent in typical data centre conditions, resulting in outstanding energy and running cost savings.”

Incentives Removed from CRC: Penalties Remain

The Comprehensive Spending Review announced that the Treasury will now take £1Bn from the sales of carbon credits under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. The intention of the scheme was that the money raised would be reinvested in a system of direct financial rewards for businesses that improved their energy efficiency. However, financial incentives are still available to offset the costs of achieving ongoing efficiencies.

Emerson Network Power’s Chloride Business Technical Support Manager Rob Tanzer explained:

“The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was originally a self-supporting ‘carrot and stick’ scheme - but the carrot’s been taken away. What remains is a one-dimensional tax on inefficiency. That, in combination with rising energy costs, means that UK data centres and high tech industry still have a huge incentive to cut energy costs by investing in increased efficiency. Enhanced Capital Allowances permit investment in energy efficient equipment to be offset against tax – so business needs to make smarter use of the incentives that remain.”
